Puerto
Rico has emerged as a major caribean transportation huhwith
extensive connections throughout the region and the continental
U.S. Most large airlines arrive and depart from San Juan's
Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.
There
is more limited service to airports in Aguadilla, Mayaguez
and Ponce. Smaller airlines provide frequent service throughout
Puerto Rico and the offshore islands (check under Airline
Companies).
American
Airlines has been the dominant air carrier, but many other
airlines have been stepping up service to Puerto Rico
from continental U.S. destinations. These include Continental,
United, TWA, Northwest, Delta and US Air. British Airways
and other major European carriers service San Juan, many
flights are direct. Frequent Latin America service is
also available, especially to nearby Caracas, Venezuela.
There
are daily scheduled flights, as well as reasonably priced
private charters, to Vieques and Culebra. Service exists
to the nearby Virgin Islands. Santo Domingo is another
easy-to-reach destination. American's regional carrier,
American Eagle, is a dominant force for Caribbean flights.
Many shorter flights leave from San Juan's Isla Grande
Airport, more centrally located than the international
airport, and helicopter service is also available for
charters. Try Caribbean Helicorp Inc. (722-1984),
Copter Corp (729-0001) or Robles Aviation
(723-8827).
Inexpensive
ferries run to Culebra and Vieques from Fajardo. (Call
Fajardo Ports Authority.) There is scheduled ferry service
in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and also private
charters.
